Original, hugely entertaining, and thought-provoking, Paul III of Montreal by Christian-Eric Falardeau is a novel that explores a social phenomenon and a new form of power — the Game. Set in a world where values have changed and the population takes to a new method of establishing their heroes and leaders, the Game, a three-dimensional version of chess, becomes the tool that society uses to put people at the top. This novel tells the story of Paul Herbert and his ascent to power, a brilliant young man who will stay at the top for twenty-years. When he finally loses, he commits suicide. Paul III is destined to be the next hero of the Game, prepped by the Orthodox Party to use at the opportune moment. With leaks about his mission, will he succeed to win and restore trust in the Game that has defined the social order for sundry years?
Paul III of Montreal is an original work that will appeal to fans of science fiction. It is a tale that can be read as an allegory of social mutations. As one reads from page to page, one is unconsciously aware of the power of technology in contemporary society. This nuanced and balanced story offers resonant themes, rich in its social commentaries and exciting in the vision of a society it draws. Falardeau's writing is dazzling, in turn lyrical and utterly descriptive. The book features a cast of characters and their fascinating inner worlds. The detailed and intelligent world building more than establishes the story as imaginative and immersive. Although set in a future time and a world so unlike ours, Paul III of Montreal feels like the story of a world we are familiar with. It offers a delectable reading experience.
