How to Plan a Memoir That Readers Cannot Put Down
Many first-time memoirists believe that because the events are true, the structure will take care of itself. This is a fatal error. Life is chaotic; narrative is order.

In Curiosity Redefines the Limits, Rodney C. Adkins
chronicles his remarkable journey from a premature birth in 1950s Miami to
becoming IBM's senior vice president overseeing global systems and technology.
Structured in six thematic sections, the memoir traces his evolution through
childhood curiosity and martial arts discipline, his formative college years at
Rollins and Georgia Tech, including founding a Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity
chapter, his thirty-three-year IBM career navigating PCs, UNIX systems, and
corporate transformation, and his intentional transition to post-career life as
a board director, mentor, and philanthropist. Adkins frames curiosity not as
mere inquisitiveness but as a strategic advantage, something he describes as
the “curiosity advantage” and that enabled him to overcome socioeconomic
barriers, industry disruptions, and even a multiple sclerosis diagnosis through
relentless exploration and adaptation.
Adkins writes with humility and executive precision, and I particularly
enjoyed how he explores personal experiences and connects them to actionable
leadership wisdom. His voice is inspirational, and he delivers practical wisdom
on how to use curiosity as a catalyst for discovery, finding solutions, and
growth. You won’t find empty platitudes replacing the hard-won insights in this
book. I learned the art of redefining perceived limitations through inquiry in
this book and had passages and thoughts underlined, such as: “Challenges are
not limits. A challenge becomes a limitation only if you are not curious enough
to explore ways to achieve a successful outcome.” One area I enjoyed reading
this book is when the author writes about the art of listening: “Knowledge
speaks, but wisdom listens,” and the operating principle of speed as “the
combination of balance, focus, and timing.” Particularly compelling is his
emphasis on “lifting as you rise, not when you arrive,’ a philosophy
demonstrated through decades of mentoring underrepresented talent in STEM. Rodney
C. Adkins skillfully illustrates how curiosity fuels not just innovation but
human connection, arguing that the most powerful questions begin with
''Why?'' ''How?'', or ''What if?'' This book entertains
as a memoir and instructs as a business manual filled with insights.
