Dead Beckoning by Mike Cobb is a well-crafted historical fiction with a strong appeal to fans of crime thrillers and sleuths. A single gunshot leaves an Atlanta businessman writhing in pain that eventually ends in death. It is hard to determine if he shot himself or was shot by someone else. But a police captain is determined to uncover the truth behind the murder, little does he know that there are many who will do all to derail his efforts, including corrupt detectives and an untrustworthy commissioner. Can Police Chief Arthur Connolly and Captain William Manly solve this case?

This is a twisty, richly drawn novel that will delight fans of sleuths. Set in 1895, the author creates a captivating portrait of the historical realities of the time, showing what captured the minds and hearts of the characters right off the bat. The story starts with a compelling premise — a gunshot that leaves a prominent businessman dead creates a sense of mystery that permeates the entire narrative. Readers want to know who fired the shot and why? Characters are elaborately written and finely drawn and I enjoyed watching as they evolved through the complex moments of this tale. Themes of family, murder, and corruption are well-explored in this beautifully told story. The luscious blend of murder and mystery will captivate readers, and the infusion of reality into the narrative will have them turning the pages. Dead Beckoning is a tale that is delightful, deftly plotted, and expertly delivered.
