The Legacy of Prairie Winds by Glenda K Clare is a saga
that chronicles the life of Johann (John) Gehring, a young German immigrant who
bravely journeys to America in search of a new life. At sixteen, Johann arrives
in the Nebraska’s rugged prairies. He encounters tornadoes, prairie fires, and experiences
the freezing winters. He learns to survive in the midst of the fiercest
challenges. Adopting the name John, he finds love with Helena, and together
they build a home and raise five children, including the spirited Berta. Helena
teaches her children to be as strong as the prairie cottonwood. But the family
will be tested with trials, tribulations, loss, and love. Follow them through
the most depressing periods in history as they brace through The Dust Bowl,
Great Depression, Spanish Flu, and wartime prejudices against the Germans.
Glenda K Clare offers a dazzling portrait of a family that
refuses to give up, offering fully drawn, sophisticated characters like Helena,
Anna, and Janus that deepen the narrative. The setting, both historical and
physical, is finely drawn, with images that translate hardship, the thrills of
the moments, and hope that kept this family together and moving towards the
future. You’ll be drawn to the characters, and while Johann’s grit will entice
you, you will find it hard not notice Janus’ stubbornness. The Legacy of
Prairie Winds features well-developed relationships, and I enjoyed how they
bring humanity and realism to the writing. The scenes are well-crafted, and
some will tug at the edges of your heart like Helena’s labor and birth of a
child during a snowstorm, and the struggle of Johann and Janus to save their
home during a devastating tornado. This is a delightful novel, and I was
fascinated by the author’s skill in blending literary elements, such as the
symbolism of the cottonwood, with intriguing characters and themes of family,
community, and grit. The storytelling is superb, and the narrative evokes
seasons of the heart that mirror the changing seasons of Nebraska.
