Ash, a self-reliant army daughter already used to constant relocation, transfers to Lucknow's St. Xavier's expecting another temporary stop, but a corridor collision with Aaryan, the school's effortlessly charming guitarist, scatters her biochemistry notes and her careful plans in Ashritta Saran’s Parallel Heartbeats. Their chemistry deepens through café study sessions, music room rehearsals, and a sunflower confession, as they survive Shreya’s jealous manipulations and Aaryan’s disapproving family. When he leaves for medical school in America, distance tests their love but doesn't break their resolve. A trembling garden proposal promises forever. But what can possibly go wrong? Fear? Distance? Circumstances will force them to separate, with Aaryan leaving Ash twice. When he finally stops running, will he find her waiting?

Parallel Heartbeats is the story of two people in different cities, each keeping one untouched room for the other. The characters are elaborately developed, and Ash’s arc is grounded in her evolution from survival mode to selfhood. Aaryan's fears come across as tragically human, rather than cowardly. The supporting cast is vividly drawn, bringing the novel to life with crackling banter. I loved the short chapters that make the story brisk, and while the pacing is measured, the exquisite prose and character work compel readers to keep turning the pages. Ashritta Saran’s worldbuilding sucked me in with sensory, specific details of Lucknow: the monsoon rain, kebabs, and hostel corridors. This tender meditation on love and the courage to choose yourself is perfect for fans of Chetan Bhagat's Half Girlfriend and Ravinder Singh’s I Too Had a Love Story.
