In J-S Rioux’s Death Followed Us Home, elite Army Rangers return from Afghanistan only to face tragedy on US soil. Sergeant Emmanuel Muñoz and his young son are murdered during a botched ATM robbery, and this sets off a series of events that bring together his old unit in a daring and dangerous game of revenge. The police investigation doesn’t move as quickly as Muñoz's grieving unit would have wanted, and so they settle on vigilante justice. Led by Staff Sergeant Thomas “Sully” Sullivan, six soldiers track down the killers to a remote meth lab. Can they exact revenge on their comrade’s behalf before their next deployment, and what are the consequences? Meanwhile, the operation uncovers a bag of cash, tempting former squad member Johann ''VD'' Van Den Brussche, who spirals into a solo crime spree, mimicking their tactics to rob drug dealers, which attracts the attention of Detective Jennifer Beck. As Beck closes in, linking VD to both the local murders and the vigilante raid via cell phone data, VD chooses an unlikely path.

Rioux crafts a gripping thriller grounded in military brotherhood. The premise had me hooked from the very start. The brutal murder of a member of an elite unit on home soil presents a disturbing reality for men who have known death in battle and in a foreign land. The premise is cleverly executed, and the author made me see how trauma can morph into vigilantism. The characters are well-drawn, and I was particularly invested in Sully, who is presented as the epitome of the moral conflict of a leader trying to protect his men while engaging in illegal actions, while VD represents the effects of greed and untreated PTSD. The setting is finely accomplished, and I had vivid imagery of the dust of Kunar Province to the quiet tension of Kentucky suburbs etched in my mind. J-S Rioux excels at exploring themes of loyalty, grief, trauma, and the limits of justice. Death Followed Us Home is a twisty thriller in which elite fighters attempt the perfect crime. The suspense centers on the question: can they succeed? This page-turning story kept me awake through the night, and its emotional currents were so strong I found myself surrendering to the spell of each gripping chapter.
