City Kitties is written by Rizwan Asad and colorfully illustrated by Andy Catling, a beautiful book for children. The mischievous Mitten asks Nessie why she never falls for his tricks and Nessie answers with a tale. While Mitten, the feisty and mischievous kitten has always succeeded with his pranks on dogs and cats he meets, Nessie, an old cat is the only one who never falls for the tricks because she's been there, “done that.” Mitten quickly discovers that Nessie has lived many lives and has traveled a lot and no matter what prank he prepares for her, she is always a step ahead of him: “I’ve lived many lives and I’ve seen many things. I’ve traveled the world and enjoyed many flings.” Nessie takes Mitten on a tale of her adventures, an exciting journey that will take children to places like Egypt.

This is a beautifully written book that introduces children to poetry. The illustrations are colorful and they tell a story by themselves. The author creates characters that young readers will adore and it is interesting to follow Mitten in his efforts to trick the old and experienced Nessie who seems to anticipate every trick before it is even played. Nessie’s adventures provide an enjoyable reading experience for children. I enjoyed the lyrical writing, the apt diction, and the strong imagery. The idea of a tale within a tale is intelligently executed. City Kitties is an enthralling and dazzlingly illustrated book that is as immersive for young readers as it can get. This breezy read will make for a perfect gift for children who enjoy exploring sophisticated characters and allowing their imagination to take them to exciting places.
