The Reckoning: A Novel by John Grisham
Review Date : October 13, 2019

John Grisham’s The Reckoning is a masterpiece and a powerful testimony that the storyteller’s ingenuity and creativity never waver. From the plot twists to the rock-solid, from the multi-dimensional characters to the skillful handling of conflict, fans will recognize the work of the master.

It starts with a crisis moment, an insane act — in the typical John Grisham craft — a decorated WWII hero and the darling of Clanton, Mississippi, Pete Banning rises early on a cool October morning, drives to town, walks into the church, and calmly shoots and kills the pastor, a man considered his friend, the Reverend Dexter Bell.  He has been a very good father, husband, and faithful Christian. Now, no one seems to understand why he’d commit such an act, and against a man of God and in a holy place. To the sheriff, the judge and his lawyers, his answer is far from satisfying when they ask about his motive: “I have nothing to say.” Can Pete’s defense attorney set him free and avoid a painful verdict?

John Grisham takes readers on an exciting journey against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South to the jungles of the Philippines during WWII.  The narrative has powerful legal implications, a suspenseful courtroom drama that literally takes any reader’s breath away, and characters that are plucked from everyday reality.  Grisham is a master entertainer who never runs out of tricks and surprises for readers, and The Reckoning is a mind-blowing, skillfully crafted yarn with delights that reverberates in the reader’s mind long after the book is closed.
